Religion is society's biggest threat: author

In the World of Bush I

will say, Amen to that

September 28, 2005
LONDON: Religious belief can cause damage to a society, contributing towards high murder rates, abortion, sexual promiscuity and suicide, according to research published yesterday.

The study says belief in and worship of God are not only unnecessary for a healthy society, but may actually contribute to social problems.

It counters the view of believers that religion is necessary to provide the moral and ethical foundations of a healthy society.

The research compares the social performance of relatively secular countries, such as Britain, with the US, where the majority believes in a creator rather than the theory of evolution.

Many conservative evangelicals in the US consider Darwinism to be a social evil, believing that it inspires atheism and amorality.

Many liberal Christians and believers of other faiths hold that religious belief is socially beneficial, believing that it helps to lower rates of violent crime, murder, suicide, sexual promiscuity and abortion.

The benefits of religious belief to a society have been described as its "spiritual capital". But the study claims that the devotion of many in the US may actually contribute to its ills.

Published in the Journal of Religion and Society, a US academic journal, it says: "Many Americans agree that their churchgoing nation is an exceptional, God-blessed, shining city on the hill that stands as an impressive example for an increasingly sceptical world.

"In general, higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy and abortion in the prosperous democracies. The United States is almost always the most dysfunctional of the developing democracies, sometimes spectacularly so."

Study author and social scientist Gregory Paul used data from the International Social Survey Program, Gallup and other research bodies to reach his conclusions. He compared social indicators such as murder rates, abortion, suicide and teenage pregnancy.

Mr Paul finds that the US is the world's only prosperous democracy where murder rates are still high, and that the least devout nations are the least dysfunctional.

He says the rates of gonorrhoea in adolescents in the US are up to 300 times higher than in less devout democratic countries. The US also suffers from "uniquely high" adolescent and adult syphilis infection rates, and adolescent abortion rates.

"The study shows that England, despite the social ills it has, is actually performing a good deal better than the USA in most indicators, even though it is now a much less religious nation than America," Mr Paul says.

The disparity is even greater when the US is compared with France, Japan and the Scandinavian countries, which have been the most successful in reducing murder rates, early mortality, sexually transmitted diseases and abortion.

Mr Paul says the evidence accumulated by several different studies suggests religion may contribute to social ills.

He suggests most Western nations would become more religious only if the theory of evolution could be overturned and the existence of God proved scientifically. Likewise, the theory of evolution would not enjoy majority support in the US unless there were a marked decline in religious belief.

"The non-religious, pro-evolution democracies contradict the dictum that a society cannot enjoy good conditions unless most citizens ardently believe in a moral creator," he says.

"The widely held fear that a godless citizenry must experience societal disaster is therefore refuted."

Mother....

You know as well as I do that God is a weapon of mass oppression in the hands of politicians

No, not American politician..ANY politician.

And it IS true our country was founded by faithful men, but freedom OF religion was not the point of the government they created. Freedom FROM religious tyranny is what they strove for.

Now I know you and I have had many sniping exchanges about the seperation of church and state. Either you BELIEVE they should be seperate or you believe our gov. has the right to back one religion over another.

If you believe that our politics should be free of religion then you must seperate the diffrence between your own personal faith and the tricks they use to make God an AMERICAN.

And you can say what you want about my VEHEMENT disagreement with putting the words under God in our pledge, but since we are both writers I ask you, why is the ORIGINAL INTENT of the AUTHOUR of the pledge allowed to be overridden by a congress caught in the grips of McCarthyisim??

The author of the pledge was a MINISTER and he DELIBERATELY left out any words of God. He was VERY clear he did so to not allow faction to become sustained. He HIMSELF wrote to congress in his own lifetime and told then NOT to change it from his original wording. They actually respected it until way after his death when this nation was caught in the grips of red panic.

It is very well known our founding fathers were yes indeed men of faith. But even they felt God could not heal the self inflicted problems of bad government.

my favorite quote EVER..?

" It matters not to me if my nieghbor believes in one God, nor twenty. It niether picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

Thomas Jefferson

I believe in God.

But God is NOT an American. Nor can he apperently do a damn thing about voter fraud. Nor should he.

Amen Christy. Give me a little sex in the White House preferrable to a murderous president and administration all declaring thier so call Gods and then going out and plundering the world in his name murdering the innocent, collatoral damage I think they call it, it makes me want to puke. This one I disagree with you on Katherine your president and his administration is one of the reasons I would not give you anything for the church today, besides the priests, I will believe in my God a God of campassion before I would ever contemplate the trash in the white house.

As your georgie demands do as I say not as I do, and if it is believed that Americans have the freedom to worship whatever God they choose hmmmm I dont think so.

"Whatever faith path an individual chooses to walk must be allowed as long as that does not include threat to another person," Does that include Georgie and his administration? can you tell me how they are any different than Osama. I dont think so, and I dont blame all Americans for your so called president and his administration, but please dont expect me to believe most of the these republicans, and I mean most not all, are not out for themselves with all their viciousness, because I will never believe that, from everything I have learned since geogie and his administration got into power.

Remember Katrina and New Orleans, remember the conscientious objectors to his murderous war, all in jail, "They did not envision a country with no religion but rather a place free from the tyranny of state-imposed and sponsered religion." isnt that where you are heading today with this administration.

Faith in God is something extremely precious to me. I find God in a baby's smile, or a friend's hand on my shoulder, or the face of my children but I don't look for him in things he's not part of like war and hate.

That is my kind of God, a God that helped me through my life in the worst of times, when I really needed to hang in there with strength.

But Your so called president has made him part of war and hate Katherine, so many Americans think his way they are no different than the Osamas of the world. explain to me the difference.

The Bush administration is the most intellectual dishonest spiritual statement I had ever seen. They torture people by manicheism and still have faith in its God to be forgiven. It's pretty bad that some people in the nation of the USA are convinced of their good intentions, then cannot even acknowledge or take the time to think or medidate about their actions.

It happened to Napoleon, it happened to Hitler (Nazis were convinced they were good people) and it will happen to the US and other nation, again and again, and we will repeat History one more time.

My biggest concern is the deep division inside this world, particularly in Europe, like France and Germany for example that want to lift the chinese embargo and develop diplomatic ties with China. I don't even see a come back to normal relations with the US, at least not under the Bush administration. He screwed it up bad :(
