Iraqi border guards found dead
From correspondents in Baghdad
October 26, 2005
THE bodies of eight Iraqi border guards, blindfolded with hands bound behind their backs, have been found near the Saudi border in western Iraq, police said.
They said the bodies were found 250km west of the Shiite Muslim holy city of Kerbala, police reported today.
There was no immediate information on who had shot them.
It was the latest in a series of similar grisly discoveries of people who might have been executed by insurgents battling the Shiite and Kurdish government and US forces in Iraq.
Iraqi security forces were frequently targeted by insurgents who, Washington said, included hundreds of foreign fighters from Arab countries such as Egypt, Syria, Sudan and Saudi Arabia.
US forces launched an offensive in Iraq's huge western province of Anbar to cut what they said was the main transit route for such fighters from Syria.
