The UN news agency, IRIN, has published a report on poverty in Iraq. It was published yesterday, a nod to the UN's International Day for Poverty Eradication. Poverty in Iraq was endemic even before the war, a result of the economy's collapse under crippling economic sanctions, imposed by the UN itself, through the Security Council, and lasting more than a decade. The effect of economic sanctions on Iraq's collapse is often left out of the narrative when reporters talk about Iraq. IRIN, sadly, has repeated this troubling omission.
