Murtha: Dem Who Started It All Wins 60% Of Votes...

Democratic U.S. Rep. John Murtha, a 32-year House veteran who weathered months of attacks from Republican rival Diana Irey, dominated at the polls Tuesday.

With 511 of 601 precincts in the 12th Congressional District reporting, Murtha had 61 percent of the vote. Murtha won Cambria County with 69 percent of the votes cast and was fielding about 60 percent support in Somerset County.

A preliminary analysis shows voter turnout this year was slightly higher than the last midterm election, a little over 40 percent, says Curtis Gans, director of the nonpartisan Center for the Study of the American Electorate at American University.

Turnout was down in some states and up in others -- notably up in Virginia, where it appeared a higher number voted than in any midterm in the state's history.
