The explosion followed a telephone warning to authorities.
Van bomb 'breaks the cease-fire' declared by ETA
MADRID (CNN) -- A van bomb at Barajas International Airport "breaks the cease-fire" that the Basque separatist group ETA declared nine months ago, Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told reporters Saturday during a nationally televised news conference.
A police source had initially said that the blast, which occurred in a stolen van and damaged a parking lot and nearby Terminal 4, caused no serious injuries. But Rubalcaba said that may not be the case: authorities were looking for a man who had stayed in his car as a companion went into the airport to pick up someone and is now missing.
If it turns out that the man is dead, his would be the first death caused by ETA in three years. Beginning about an hour before the 9 a.m. explosion, three calls to authorities warned of the event, the third identifying it as an ETA blast, Rubalcaba said. (Posted: 8:24 a.m. ET)
