Newsweek is reporting that a new poll shows that a plurality of Americans back the recommendations made by the bipartisan independent Iraq Study Group, but that over a quarter of the respondents said, "in effect: 'Report, what report?'"

"Mission accomplished," the magazine declares in regards to the hope by ISG chairmen Jim Baker and Lee Hamilton that "a new political consensus be built," even though the reaction to the report by many politicians on both the left and the right has mostly ranged from mixed to negative.

According to Newsweek's poll, consisting of interviews with 1,000 adults conducted between Dec. 6 and Dec. 7, "Americans back the ISG’s recommendations by a two-to-one margin," as "39 percent of Americans said they generally agree with the group’s 79 recommendations, while 20 percent said they disagree."

"Twenty-six percent said, in effect: 'Report, what report?'" Newsweek reports.

In the "most pessimistic assessment the NEWSWEEK poll has ever recorded....more than two out of three Americans believe the United States is losing ground in Iraq (68 percent), versus 21 percent who say it is making progress."

"A near-record 53 percent believe invading Iraq was a mistake, compared to 39 percent who say it was the right course of action," the magazine also reports.
