ROME: The U.S. Embassy in Rome is advising Americans to avoid the Italian town of Vicenza on Saturday, when some 70,000 protesters are expected to demonstrate against planned expansion of the U.S. military base there.
Premier Romano Prodi angered some in Italy, including far-left members of his center-left coalition, a few weeks ago when he said his government would not oppose the expansion of the base in northeast Italy.
Anti-globalization protesters have said they will join the protest on Saturday.
"Although violence is not expected, some of the groups who may participate in the protest have been disruptive in the past," said the notice for U.S. citizens posted on the embassy's Web site.
