Violence in Darfur, Iraq top State Department list of worlds worst human rights abuses
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The continued genocide in Sudan's Darfur region was world's worst human rights abuse last year, a State Department report found.
In its annual report on human rights around the world, the State Department also found deteriorating human rights records in U.S.-backed democracies in Iraq and Afghanistan, and cited a disturbing trend of harassment of non-governmental organizations and the media, along with new laws imposing strict controls on their activities and on Internet use.
The report, covering 196 countries, cited some progress around the world but found a series of "sobering realities" in many countries.
The United States also acknowledged questions about its own human rights record in fighting the war on terrorism and in Iraq. In rolling out the report, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said, "Our democratic system of governance is accountable but it is not infallible." --From CNN State Department producer Elise Labott (Posted 1:38 p.m.)
