-- Japanese media reports a strong earthquake jolted the South Pacific Ocean, creating possibility of tsunami, according to Reuters.

Reuters) -- A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 jolted the South Pacific Ocean on Monday, Japanese media reported.

Kyodo news agency said there was a possibility of tsunami in the Pacific Ocean after the earthquake which occurred near the Solomon Islands at 5:40 a.m. (2040 GMT) Japan time.

Japan's Meteorological Agency is looking into the possibility of tidal waves hitting the Japanese archipelago after the quake, Japanese media said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
