Sudanese negotiators back U.N. helicopters in Darfur.
Sudanese officials working to finalize a deal on U.N. support for the African Union mission in Darfur have recommended Khartoum permit the use of attack helicopters by peacekeepers, the Foreign Ministry said. “They have made a positive recommendation and it is now up to the leadership. Time for Real Global Diplomacy to End Darfur’s Genocide
I am deeply concerned that my own government’s and international efforts to end the genocide in Darfur are stalling. President al-Bashir remains adamant in his resolve not to accept a credible and effective force – in whatever form – to protect the millions of Darfurians living in extreme danger. The situation in Darfur and eastern Chad is visibly deteriorating, very possibly headed toward humanitarian collapse, as the UN humanitarian leadership repeatedly warns. Yet the world continues only to express verbal outrage about Khartoum’s calculated policy of death and displacement, more than four years after it began.
