60pc oppose hosting US missile defence base
WARSAW, Poland: Sixty per cent of Poles oppose hosting a US missile defence base in their country, according to a poll released on Friday, opposition that has inched up in past weeks as Washington and Warsaw have intensified talks and Russia has warned of a new arms race.
The survey, conducted by CBOS, a publicly-funded institute based in Warsaw, also showed that 26 per cent of those questioned support US placement of a missile defence on Polish territory, up one point from a similar poll from April.
The CBOS said it has tracked a rise in opposition to missile defence since 2005, when 32 per cent supported it. The previous survey, in April, showed opposition of 57 per cent.
The poll, conducted June 1-4, questioned 903 adults and gave a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The US is in talks with Warsaw to place 10 interceptors in Poland, and wants a related radar base in the neighbouring Czech Republic. Washington says the system would protect most of Europe from future missile attacks from Iran. But Russia has warned it could provoke a new arms race.
