Bullshit from a Jackass
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). I appreciate your sharing your views on this issue with me.
Our nation is in the midst of an energy crisis and expanded oil production is badly needed. The demand for energy is far greater than the supply. The United States currently imports more than half of its oil consumption and our national security is threatened by a growing reliance on foreign oil. I understand your concern for the environment and your interest in preserving our wildlife refuges. However, I believe it is possible to drill for oil in ANWR without hurting the refuge's environment. Modern drilling and production techniques have very little impact on the environment and existing federal laws strictly require oil companies to protect wildlife during oil and gas operations on federal land. For example, since drilling began in Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay 20 years ago, not one polar bear has been killed and the Bay's caribou herd has actually grown in size.
I believe that drilling for oil in ANWR, combined with the use of energy-efficient technologies, will put America on the track to energy security and independence. I think we want to see the same end results, but we do disagree on how to get there. I can assure you that I will continue to look for ways to increase domestic energy production without hurting the environment.
Once again, thank you for contacting me about this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future.
Sincerely,
A
