World needs to wage peace on war

ALGIE ABRAMS GUEST COLUMNIST

I believe that, given a set of choices and conditions, each of us has the capacity to be trained, detached and operated to exhibit those same behaviors we call evil. The military is about creating killers; it does its job very well, and today it continues to deliver its violence in more efficient, detached and sanitary methods. What else could explain how the average Joe, who could never be paid, convinced or coerced into bombing his family or his neighbor's homes and businesses, could do so every day in Iraq?

This violence seeps into our society from the periphery of war and supporting military-industrial-political complex. Perhaps the number of wars we fight is related to the ambient levels of violence and intolerance in our own country. Canada has one-tenth the murder rate of the United States and, as a country, has openly and readily debated and legitimized gay marriage. How many wars has Canada declared?

We must wage peace on war, until peace wins.

Israeli envoy secretly expelled

05feb05

THE Department of Foreign Affairs remained tight-lipped today about the apparent expulsion of an Israeli diplomat from Australia as the opposition complained it was not informed.A senior diplomat based in Canberra was forced to leave the country, according to a report in the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv.
The report said the expulsion had been covered up for several weeks and could be linked to a scandal last year in which two alleged agents of the Israeli spy service, Mossad, were arrested in New Zealand.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has lectured her Russian counterpart on the Kremlin's slow pace of democratic reforms, but signalled Washington's reluctance to go too hard and isolate Moscow.A senior State Department official said Ms Rice had a two-and-a-half hour working dinner with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at her hotel in Ankara on the fourth leg of her tour of eight European capitals and the Middle East.

The meeting was aimed at preparing a February 24 summit between presidents George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin in Slovakia. But Ms Rice used her first talks with Mr Lavrov as chief US diplomat to lecture him on democracy.

Sunni clerics want troops out

From correspondents in Baghdad

05feb05

IRAQ's leading Sunni religious authority has made its participation in the upcoming constitution-drafting process conditional on the announcement of a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops. The Committee of Muslim Scholars' spokesman, Omar Ragheb, was speaking to the press today after its chairman Hareth al-Dari met UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's special envoy in Iraq, Ashraf Qazi.
"Qazi asked the committee to take part in drafting the constitution. We told him that we had conditions and that we would discuss them with the parties that boycotted the polls and would put forward a common stance," he said.
"These demands focus on reaching a consensus with all political parties on a withdrawal of foreign forces."

06feb05

THE final result of Iraq's historic election would be announced within five days, the electoral commission said overnight."God willing, we will announce the final results before February 10," said commission official Farid Ayar.
Then, "appeals can be made for nine days".
"Afterwards, the commission will validate the final results."
The count continued overnight, although no new partial results were given.
