More than 7000 prisoners are being evacuated from the city of New Orleans and nearby areas stricken by vast floodwaters left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.Louisiana Department of Corrections spokeswoman Pamela LaBorde said several prisons in and around New Orleans were flood damaged or surrounded by floodwaters. Jails had also suffered power and water cuts, she said.
"Public safety is our top priority," Ms LaBorde said overnight, adding that at least 7600 inmates were being evacuated under high security by bus and boat. Two jails near the storm-hit southern city had also been evacuated.
New Orleans officials have said about 80 per cent of their city of 480,000 people is under water up to seven metres deep.
