I'm in love with the Rude Pundit

Yep, like Clarence Thomas, that shining beacon of hope for the black community, Alberto Gonzales, who is, indeed, the first Hispanic Attorney General and, in fact, Attorney General to all of us, will glow like a 7-11 burrito being nuked in a cheese-stained microwave, casting a beam on smiling would-be torturing Hispanics everywhere, wondrous Hispanics who toil in the fields of America, trying so hard to justify the ways of the white people who order them to do their bidding.

(Oh, and, by the way, John McCain, you gimpy motherfucker? Don't you ever try to take the moral high ground on anything, ever again. Not only did you stay stone silent on Gonzales, but you sucked it up like a good little butt boy and voted for the torture master.)

(Oh, and, fuck you, Joe Lieberman.)

Ignoring the Smoke
Humankind is changing, or at least helping change, Earth's climate by pumping carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse" gases into the atmosphere, mostly by burning fossil fuels. The United States is doing more of this than any other nation. The consequences aren't coming; they're already here: Some scientists believe thousands have already died because of man-made atmospheric warming.

GOP proposes bill that would suspend ALL laws
But -- most overlooked -- is Section 102 of this bill. It would empower the Secretary of Homeland Security to suspend any and all laws in order to ensure the "expeditious" construction of a set of barriers and roads south of San Diego, to keep illegal immigrants out. It also would prohibit ANY judicial review of the Secretary of Homeland Security's decision to suspend any law. ON EDIT: While the law the bill references mentions barriers and roads "near San Diego," it does not appear to be (technically speaking) limited to that area -- but to any barriers or roads "in the vicinity of the United States border." Pentagon still failing to protect the troops
By Edward M. Kennedy and Brian and Alma Hart February 3, 2005
THE THREE of us first met in November 2003 at Arlington National Cemetery when PFC John Hart was buried after being killed in an ambush of his unarmored Humvee in northern Iraq. We discussed the armor issue and how to resolve it, and we've been working together ever since to get the troops what they need as quickly as possible.
Unarmored Humvees had first come to our attention in August 2003 when Massachusetts soldiers serving in the Rhode Island National Guard were killed by roadside bombs called IEDs -- "improvised explosive devices." Our troops quickly learned that improvised armor protection was not effective against these improvised explosives. Soon we began seeing reports of anxious parents buying body armor, and even vehicle armor, and mailing it to their sons and daughters in a desperate effort to fill the gap.
So when Specialist Thomas Jerry Wilson questioned Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in Kuwait in December about why soldiers had to dig through landfills to find scrap metal to protect their Humvees, he was asking a question that should have been answered many months ago, when it first became clear that our troops were being sent out on patrol in inadequately armored vehicles.

.Parents censor high school literature and are allowed to burn books they find offensive

Here in Norwood, a small group of parents sent letters to Superintendent Bob Conder, expressing their concern over, "Bless Me, Ultima," a book being used in the classroom as a literature book. Conder said the books, about 2 dozen in total costing $6.99 each, were pulled from the classroom, and designated to be destroyed. The parents approached the superintendent and asked that they be able to burn the books instead of the school janitor destroying them.
Conder granted them their request, as he has the right to dispose of them. Conder informed the School Board in a letter after the fact. He further stated, "I can’t dictate morality, but my job is to protect the kids. The books should have never been purchased, and were not properly disclosed for approval."

Rumsfeld may skip Germany because of war-crimes suit

WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Thursday he may skip a trip to a security conference in Germany next week because of a lawsuit there accusing him of war crimes.
"It's something that we have to take into consideration," he said when asked whether the suit was a factor in weighing whether to attend the Munich Conference on Security Policy, an annual gathering of government defense officials and lawmakers, where an address by the U.S. defense secretary is typically a highlight.
Attorneys from the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights filed a suit with German prosecutors last November charging that U.S. officials, including Rumsfeld, are responsible for acts of torture against detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Bush lays off the ultimatums
February 4, 2005

It's what the State of the Union left out that makes it interesting, writes Michael Gawenda.
For all George Bush's rhetoric on spreading freedom and liberty around the world - the clarion call of his second term - he seems to be subtly, but surely, changing his foreign policy.

Sharansky's take on war and peace wins Bush's ear
By Megan Goldin in JerusalemFebruary 4, 2005
It has been a long and lonely road for the former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky, who has for years been ridiculed for his political theories of spreading democracy across the globe to obtain world peace.
But the former labour camp prisoner, who is now an Israeli cabinet minister, no longer walks alone.
His companion in his campaign to democratise the world is no less than the US President, George Bush.
To have the ear of the most powerful leader in the world after decades of having his political ideology dismissed as naive and eccentric is a pleasant change for the diminutive Ukrainian-born mathematician.

Say huh Tonto?

Oh I'll pray for you alright Georgie...I will pray that God has mercy on your murdering thieving soul. I will pray that YOUR children NEVER suffer as you have made so many suffer. I will pray that my children live and my beloved nation is cleansed of immoral war, and the stink of torture. I will beg God to hear me when I ask for the entire world NOT to forsake us BECAUSE of YOU Duh' Leader. But mostly Georgie I will pray that the TRUTH of 9/11, Enron, Halliburton, Medicaid, torture, Iraq, vote fraud, war profiteering, desertion, DUIs, insurance Fraud, propaganda, energy market manipulation, mass murder , Abu Graib, Osama bin Laden , the House Of Saud, lie after lie,TREASON....ALL catchs up with you at once.

I don't pretend to know what God thinks but I have faith that everytime He ponders you Duh' Leader, He can't help but shake His mighty head.

I cannot remember a time I have EVER heard anyone who ORDERED so many deaths speak so MUCH about God.

Perhaps George, the Gods of War would be pleased with YOUR bloody offerings. But since you're not even good at war either..I HIGHLY DOUBT IT.

The One that made the trees is watching you Georgie. If I were you I would confess now and beg for mercy. Mercy you, yourself, are not capable of.

Collateral Damage

Lullaby

Hush little baby,
Don’t say a word.
Your dreams are dead;
Your voice unheard.
Cry no more,
Just pray for peace.
Mommys failed,
And man is beast.
See their hatred
Burn, so bright.
Lighting up
The sky tonight.
A holy war;
On holy ground.
Not one angel,
To be found.
But Mommy’s here.
No more sorrow.
I hope you live.
To see tomorrow.
Your Daddy’s dead.
Your brother’s gone.
If we survive,
We'll move on.
Past the snipers,
And the rubble.
Beyond the murder,
And its trouble.
If you grow up,
Keep this trait;
For only hope,
Can stop the hate.
Your pretty face,
With aged eyes,
Must be strong,
Against all lies.
Crushed beneath,
Boots and tanks,
The militant,
Are closing ranks.
Mommy’s here,
Don’t be scared.
You must be brave,
If you are spared.
When both guns,
And sorrow cease,
You must be able,
To brave the peace.
Hear not, child,
The soldiers scream.
Listen to
Your Mommys dream.
Because of you,
I'll live on,
Even after,
This night I'm gone.
Look at me!
Turn from death!
That fouls this life,
With every breath.
We cannot run;
No where to go.
What will happen?
I don't know.
Think not of,
The shaking walls.
Hold mommy tight,
As death calls.
Think instead,
Of rolling waters.
Not of the blood,
That covers martyrs.
Go hide yourself
In the night!
Don't come back!
Until its light.
Do not cry,
I'm in your heart.
But for now,
We must part.
Now they come!
You must go!
Whatever happens,
You must grow.
Run, child, run!
I'll hold the door!
But Mommys' love,
Can't stop the war.

U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror by Peter Grose Special to the New York Times 9/4/1967 -- "New York Times -- page 2" -- WASHINGTON, Sept. 3-- United States officials were surprised and heartened today at the size of turnout in South Vietnam's presidential election despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting. According to reports from Saigon, 83 per cent of the 5.85 million registered voters cast their ballots yesterday. Many of them risked reprisals threatened by the Vietcong. The size of the popular vote and the inability of the Vietcong to destroy the election machinery were the two salient facts in a preliminary assessment of the nation election based on the incomplete returns reaching here. Pending more detailed reports, neither the State Department nor the White House would comment on the balloting or the victory of the military candidates, Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu, who was running for president, and Premier Nguyen Cao Ky, the candidate for vice president. A successful election has long been seen as the keystone in President Johnson's policy of encouraging the growth of constitutional processes in South Vietnam. The election was the culmination of a constitutional development that began in January, 1966, to which President Johnson gave his personal commitment when he met Premier Ky and General Thieu, the chief of state, in Honolulu in February.

ACTION ALERT ACTION ALERT
U.S. Senate is poised to lock you out of the courtroom!
A key part of President Bush’s agenda for his second term is "legal reform." You can expect to hear him go on about it during his State of the Union address tonight. Unfortunately, like WMD in Iraq and the latest "crisis" in Social Security, the Administration’s case for making drastic changes to the legal system is another sham based on misinformation and deception, and serves as a front for the corporate agenda so dear to Mr. Bush.

As part of this drive the Senate will vote the week of February 7 on the so-called "Class Action Fairness Act" (S. 5). There is nothing fair about this proposed law. It is simply a way for corporations to restrict the legal rights of ordinary citizens to fight unscrupulous companies that sell unsafe products, rip off consumers, pollute the environment and employ unfair labor practices.

Correspondence care of Medact The Grayston Centre 28 Charles Square London N1 6HT The Rt Hon Tony Blair MP 10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA 8 December 2004 Dear Prime Minister, The medical journal The Lancet recently published a study that estimates the post-invasion Iraqi death toll at 98,000. The same study reported that the risk of death from violence among Iraqis is vastly higher than it was before the war began. You have rejected these findings, but offer no comparable assessment of your own. As you know, your government is obliged under international humanitarian law to protect the civilian population during military operations in Iraq, and you have consistently promised to do so. However, without counting the dead and injured, no one can know whether Britain and its Coalition partners are meeting these obligations. We therefore urge you immediately to commission a comprehensive, independent inquiry to determine with the greatest possible accuracy how many Iraqis have died or been injured since March 2003 - and the cause of those casualties.

Alas, John McCain:Oh, dear John McCain, sweet Senator from Arizona, how the Rude Pundit feels for you. You remember every night, don't you, Senator McCain, the pain and humiliation dealt to you at the hands of the Vietcong. God, what they did to you , in those years in as a POW, held in bamboo cages. How they hurt you, Senator McCain, broke your teeth, broke your bones. How tight were the ropes that bound your arms, twisting them, contorting your muscles. "Torture ropes," as you called them, are meant to make control of a prisoner simple - just a brief pull and the verge of pain upon which you've been living becomes the precipice of pain that you feel. How they beat you, Senator McCain, viciously, on a daily basis, sometimes several times a day, demanding that you say you're a criminal, a terrorist, if you will. They fucked you up

Infighting Cited at Homeland Security
Squabbles Blamed for Reducing Effectiveness
By John MintzWashington Post Staff WriterWednesday, February 2, 2005; Page A01
As its leadership changes for the first time, the Department of Homeland Security remains hampered by personality conflicts, bureaucratic bottlenecks and an atmosphere of demoralization, undermining its ability to protect the nation against terrorist attack, according to current and former administration officials and independent experts.
Although the 22-month-old department has vast powers over the lives of travelers, immigrants and citizens, it remains a second-tier agency in the clout it commands within President Bush's Cabinet, the officials said. Pockets of dysfunction are scattered throughout the 180,000-employee agency, they said.

FSU center spent public money to tout feds' policies
By Kimberly Miller
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, February 02, 2005
A Florida State University center has used more than a half-million in education tax dollars to put a positive spin on President Bush's key school policies, including hiring a public relations firm to teach charter schools to be more media-savvy.
Despite conflicting studies on the success of charter schools and other alternative education programs, the School Choice Center at FSU touts them as ways to "increase student achievement, increase parental involvement, promote school improvement through constructive competition, and accomplish racial and ethnic diversity."

Holy crap

Even more curiously, a "senior administration official" who briefed reporters on the Social Security proposal earlier today disclosed details of the White House plan that I don't think will play well in Peoria. Most significantly, this official revealed that most or all of the earnings from new "personal" or privatized accounts will be paid not to the holder of the account, but to the government. The senior official called this a "benefit offset." It's one way to finance the creation of these private accounts, but it's going to cause quite a political stir, I think.

New Republic Calls for Death and Torture of Arundhati Roy and Stan Goff
By DAVE ZIRIN
The words "libelous" and 'the New Republic" have a proud history of walking arm-in-arm. Now, in the esteemed tradition of [former TNR writer who peddled fiction as fact] Stephen Glass, The New Republic has stooped to a new low, publishing a piece that calls for violence, torture, and even death for leading leftists who dare oppose Bush's war on terror and the slaughter in Iraq.

"Interestingly, Frank didn't have the guts to slander another one of the panel speakers, exonerated death row inmate Shujaa Graham. Graham, who has been moved to speak out against the torture of Iraqi prisoners by intimately connecting their pain with his own experience of torture in California's death row, escaped Frank's pen. I guess it's hard to pose fantasy threats of torture and death toward someone who has actually looked it in the face."

Introducing Me and Myself

Who am I

In the intrest of full disclosure and to try to answer individual curiosity, I have decided to give an interview to Myself and provide the transcript here.
As you will see, in questioning Myself I tried to remain as fair and balanced as possible. However; after taking Myself into the spin zone, I walked away from me with the distinct feeling I had been spun.
Here is the transcript in full of my conversation with myself.

Me: Ok..Let's start this off by..
Self: I'm ready when you are.
Me: (polite pause) Yes, ok, let's begin with your name, rank, and cereal number...?
Self: Umm...
Me: Can I quote you on that?
Self: Uh...Ok..My name is Christy and I am a mommy...I don't..um..
Me: Cereal Number?
Self: ...Umm ...Two Fruit Loops and a box of Corn flakes ?
Me: Works for me...Ok. So how many kids do you have?
Self: Five, one son 4 daughters.
Me: Wow.
Self: Yeah ..thats what I said.
Me: So why DID you start this blog thing?
Self: Well I got drunk one night and thought , hmm that looks fun. It turned out well though because now I have a place to post news items people may have missed.
Me: Umm Dont they have newspapers for that?
Self: Yes and No.
Me: What do you mean?
Self: I mean newspapers are a place that news is SUPPOSED to be reported; but in these scary times reporters are either ignoring the news or worse, flat out distorting it...
Me: Isn't that dangerous?
Self: Yes, very dangerous.
Me: So what is it news papers are NOT saying?
Self: For one, the words war criminal and war profiteering....They are..
Me: War profiteering?
Self: Yes, as in profiting from war...They are not using the word 'Treason' either...
Me: Treason?
Self: Yes.
Me: Are you crazy?
Self: If I am I'm not alone.
Me: Well..Umm..ok..(inaudible)... Then WHY treason?
Self: Starting with 9/11...Did YOU know the insurance on the WTC was increased by 300% less than 90 days before they were destroyed?
Me: No, I did not know that...
Self: Not many do.
Me: But..I thought it was bin Laden who attacked us?
Self: It was bin Laden..But HE did not buy insurance on the WTC...When we find him ..you can ask him about it.
Me: So who committed treason then....?
Self: We will ask him that too.
Me: Lets move on to Iraq.
Self: Don't get me started...
Me: Started on..?
Self: Iraq serves many peoples intrests but not 'The Peoples' intrest. Our soldiers are digging through garbage to up armor thier vehicles while Bush and his supporters throw a 40 million dollar party. Our soldiers are ordered to kill innocent people for what we KNOW are lies. This is the worst situation imaginable for our troops. They are not fighting Vietnamese rice farmers for sure. Since there are no front lines women are literally on the battlefield. Our soldiers are being used as human shields for Halliburton employees.
Bush cannot secure the people of Iraq but the new US bases on thier pipelines are going up pretty well. He can order the city of Fallujah, The City of Churchs,.. destroyed, but he cannot seem to build a single thing that would better the lives of those he's claiming to have freed.
Me: Um..Won't the US bases being built there 'secure' the situation?
Self: Oh yeah they tried that once in a place called Korea once...That hasn't worked out very well for anyone... And if...
Me: But won't the oil be used for...?
Self: For what?!....I don't see us getting rich off Iraqi oil. I don't see Iraqis getting rich off of it either! The truth is both the Bush and bin Laden family fortunes are based on oil and defense contracts. Its convienant that a war is raging over the second largest oil reserve on earth. Both of these families have gotten FILTHY rich.
Me: Are you saying the Bush/ bin Laden family fortunes are related?
Self: Ofcourse they are related, Closer than anyone should be comfortable with. It's true that bin Laden family money is how our current President was set up in bunk oil companies thirty something years ago.
Me: Your Joking?
Self: Would I lie to you?...A man named James Bathh was the Texas money manager for the bin Laden family. He invested in Bush..After all they had failed a piss test together.
Me: Ok... But why would Saudis (of all people) invest in junk oil companies in Texas?
Self: That is a very good question. Perhaps we should ask Mr. Bathh... Osama is very likely to know the answer and without a doubt Bush knows why. So does his daddy.
Me: Hmm Ok...Let's go back to you...
Self: Do we have too...?
Me: Yes.
Self: Why?
Me: Because I say so...ok What are your goals in life?
Self: A degree in anthropology and the Presidency of the United States...Oh and I need a nanny.
Me: Your saying your going to be President one day?
Self: Yes..I didn't tell you?
Me: Ummm..No. I must have missed that part...(inaudible)...But won't your past as a stripper and your anger management issues be used against you?
Self: Yes, probably the nanny too.
Me: So..then..um how..?
Self: I'll use the current administrations' example... All we have to do is say if you question my motives you are unpatriotic.
Me: Isn't that horribly unfair and wrong?
Self: Why, yes, it is,.. isn't it?
Me: Um ok anthropology as in that Darwin stuff?
Self: Yes, actually, evolution is my intrest.
Me: Didn't you know that's un-christian?
Self: No. I did not know that.
Me: Umm ok, nevermind,...(inaudible)...to ask your political leanings?
Self: Well,I was actually raised a conservative republican. But I now consider myself a moderate democrat. I'm proud to be a liberal.
Me: WHAT?!!! A liberal?!! WHY?...?
Self: Maybe it was that Mexican experience, could be Clintons fault... Or it could be I've just known too many republicans...
Me: Don't liberals have coodies?
Self: Don't be an ass. Jesus was a liberal. So was Ghandi.
Me: UMM ..Moving on.
Self: Yes?
Me: Is it true yall practice voodoo in Louisiana?
Self: Does voodo mean drunken naked tree hugging?
Me: Yes.
Self: Umm..Well, then...yes.
Me: Ok, since you are totally beginning to bore me...
Self: (inaudible) you too.
Me: (continues)...ask you just just one more question before we go?
Self: Hmmm?
Me: Did mom ever find those other pictures she would hate...?
Self: If...(inaudible).. go down YOU go down!....(inaudible)...(crosstalk)...(screams)...
Me: Ok well...That does it for now...This is Christy signing off...
Self: Whatever!
Me: Tune in next week for the premeire episode of 'Life as a Bad Play'...

END TRANSCRIPT.

Sorry Yall. I don't have any tax payer money to pay a real journalist to do the legwork for me. Gotta go with the resources you have not the resources you might WANT to have....

GONZALES ADDED TO WAR CRIMES COMPLAINT IN GERMANY; NEW EVIDENCE SHOWS FAY REPORT ON ABU GHRAIB PROTECTED OFFICIALS

CCR filed new documents on January 31, 2005, with the German Federal Prosecutor looking into war crimes charges against high-ranking U.S. officials including Donald Rumsfeld: one includes new evidence that the Fay investigation into Abu Ghraib protected Administration officials – it is a comprehensive and shocking opinion by Scott Horton, an expert on international law and the Chair of the International Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. The second is a letter that details how Attorney General nominee Alberto Gonzales’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee confirms his role as complicit in the torture and abuse of detainees in Abu Ghraib and elsewhere in Iraq.

Legion Leader Decries Undersecretary's Remarks on Veterans

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The leader of the nation's largest military veterans organization has reacted strongly to comments made by the Pentagon's undersecretary for personnel and readiness, Dr. David Chu.
Chu was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article Tuesday, pitting veterans from past wars against those currently serving in the war on terrorism, alleging veterans' benefits were taking away funds from national defense.
"His remarks about veterans' pay and benefits that 'the amounts have gotten to the point where they are hurtful...they are taking away from the nation's ability to defend itself' is a slap in the face to every veteran who took the oath to uphold and defend the constitution against all enemies," Cadmus wrote in a letter to the editor of the Journal.
"Our country cannot separate military retirees from veterans -- a veteran is a veteran!" asserted Thomas P. Cadmus, national commander of The American Legion. "When their country called all gave their best -- some gave their last -- and they deserve the best our country can give them."

The Nuclear Option in the Senate: A Preemptive Strike for Absolute Power

A January National Review column by former Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, floor remarks by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, and op eds in the Wall Street Journal and elsewhere are clear: the right wing is mounting an all-out attack on the 200-year-old tradition of the filibuster in the Senate to clear the way for President Bush’s most extreme, ultra-conservative nominees to the federal bench and, eventually, to the U.S. Supreme Court. To that end, it’s obvious that the truth is no obstacle to any argument.

The Costly Right to Know

Citizens who rate the Freedom of Information law as priceless had better consider this: The Justice Department is demanding close to $400,000 from a public interest foundation before honoring its request for information on a lingering mystery of 9/11 - the secret numbers of immigrants who were rounded up after the terrorist attacks and never heard from as their court records were sealed. This huge tab, presented to the People for the American Way Foundation, is well beyond established criteria and amounts to an insult to the law's intent: letting citizens in on some of the murkier things the government may be up to.

HOMELAND INSECURITY
Issue of 2005-02-07Posted 2005-01-31
It’s not easy to remember, but we didn’t always think of ourselves as a target-rich country. A rich country, sure, but terms such as "target-rich" and all that they imply hadn’t penetrated everyday American awareness. Today, nearly everyone who studies the sources of potential terrorism, particularly the global jihadist movement, believes that more attacks are inevitable. Stephen Flynn, in his book "America the Vulnerable," likens this period to the Phony War—the eight months, beginning in September, 1939, after Hitler had invaded Poland, and Britain and France had declared war on Germany, when essentially nothing happened. The United States hasn’t been attacked for more than three years now, an extraordinarily happy fact for which the Bush Administration is quick to take the credit. If that changes, the Department of Homeland Security seems well positioned to take the blame.

"Senate Democrats have enough votes to block major Bush initiatives like Social Security reform and to reject Bush appointees, including Supreme Court nominees. They may be suicidal, but they could undermine the president's entire second term agenda. At his news conference last week, Bush reacted calmly to their vitriolic attacks, suggesting only a few Democrats are involved. Stronger countermeasures will be needed, including an unequivocal White House response to obstructionism, curbs on filibusters, and a clear delineation of what's permissible and what's out of bounds in dissent on Iraq. Too much is at stake to wait for another Democratic defeat in 2006".

Sinclair's Hyman wrong on Ohio voting problems
On the Januauary31 edition of "The Point," Sinclair vice president Mark Hyman falsely asserted that "not a single documented case has been found" of an Ohio voter "being forced to wait as long as 11 hours" to vote during the 2004 presidential election and disputed the proven claim that "voters in heavily Democratic city precincts were forced to wait hours to vote." But according to news reports in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post, that is exactly what happened.

Justice and 9-11

After failing to obtain any competent investigation or tangible results from the 9/11 Commission, the White House, or Congress (many of the governmental personnel responsible for preventing an attack on the U.S. have actually been promoted since 9-11), many Americans are asking whether justice may be obtained through the courts. The answer is complicated, and it would be impossible for a brief article such as this to do anything other than scratch the surface concerning 9-11 justice.

Catch-22
In today's New York Times, Paul Krugman nails the fundamental Catch-22 of the Republican Social Security privatization scheme.
In a nutshell, when privatization advocates talk about the benefits of their plans, they assume extremely rosy economic growth for the next 75 years. Unrealistically rosy growth. But if their daydreams come true, then the "crisis" they claim Social Security is in disappears, too — the economic growth is more than enough to cover the modest problems the trust fund faces down the road.
In other words, their "solution" only works if the "problem" disappears.

Gorbachev Calls Iraqi Elections "Fake"

Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev called the Iraqi parliamentary elections a profanation.
In an interview with the Interfax news agency, he said the elections are "very far from what true elections are. And even though I am a supporter of elections and of the transfer of power to the people of Iraq, these elections were fake."

The Vietnam turnout was good as well

On September 4 1967 the New York Times published an upbeat story on presidential elections held by the South Vietnamese puppet regime at the height of the Vietnam war. Under the heading "US encouraged by Vietnam vote: Officials cite 83% turnout despite Vietcong terror", the paper reported that the Americans had been "surprised and heartened" by the size of the turnout "despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting". A successful election, it went on, "has long been seen as the keystone in President Johnson's policy of encouraging the growth of constitutional processes in South Vietnam". The echoes of this weekend's propaganda about Iraq's elections are so close as to be uncanny.

PRESS RELEASE: Prominent Statisticians Refute 'Explanation' of 2004 U.S. Exit Poll Discrepancies in New Edison/Mitofsky Report and Urge Investigation of U.S. Presidential Election Results
According to analysis by the group of senior statisticians, the new data just released by the exit-pollsters shows that the possibility that the overall vote count was substantially corrupted must be taken seriously. "Now we have statistical evidence that these reports were the tip of a national iceberg. The hypothesis that the discrepancy between the exit polls and election results is due to errors in the official election tally is a coherent theory that must be explored," said statistician Josh Mitteldorf.

Before you dismiss it as partisan hyperbole, hear Edelman's specifics: The basic structure of Social Security is under attack (on the grounds that the program is in crisis, though most respected economists say it isn't). Pell Grants for college tuition are on the cutting block. So are Section 8 housing vouchers (which started under Richard Nixon) and food stamps. Programs that have offered some protection for people in the lower third of the economy are under threat of evisceration.
